Every second Monday of the month, The Promontory hosts their beloved open mic series The Corner, a talent showcase that spotlights local musicians while giving emerging artists exposure via open mic. The Promontory is the perfect spot to host this event, as the venue aims to pay tribute to the South Side’s musical legacy and roots. Inside The Corner, there are only two rules that you need to know: one, respect the mic and two, each artist has only 5 minutes to perform. The Corner is an inclusive space, where both artists and audience members are made to feel welcomed. Audience feedback and participation is heavily encouraged.
We had the pleasure of attending the August 12 show, and it did not disappoint. The venue was heavy with raw, genuine talent including featured artists rapper/musician Neak and Oliv Blu. The music styles varied from jazz, hip/hop and spoken word, to country-inspired, to even bubbly, pop sounds. Here’s a tip, the best seat in the house is at the bar. Not only are you up close and personal with every artist, but also it gives you easy access to the venue’s uniquely named cocktails.
In the same way that Chicago is vivid and diverse, each artist to take the stage brought their own personal twist to the mic. The all-ages crowd was both supportive and enthusiastic, creating a high-energy vibe and truly magnetic atmosphere. From the hosts, bartenders, along with the house band, Left Jones, everyone involved worked together to make it a memorable night. After a long Monday, it’s a great way to unwind, meet others in the community, and get exposed to a small fraction of the talent that’s present in Chicago. We will definitely be returning to The Corner again.
The Corner takes place every second Monday night from 7pm until midnight at The Promontory in Hyde Park. Tickets are $5- you can purchase them online or at the door.
