Legacy Men’s Boutique Owner Mandene Muhammad

“I used to have to take you all kicking and screaming to the thrift stores, now you have the nerve to open up one,” Mandene Muhammad laughed while recalling his aunt’s reaction at his grand opening.

Raised by his aunt, Muhammad spent his youth shopping at thrift stores and garage sales due to family finances. As an adult, he felt an urgency to give back to the youth, and began collecting suits to help young men with graduations and school luncheons.   A friend noticed his growing suit collection and suggested that he open a men’s resale boutique.   It would be another year before Muhammad happened to notice an available retail space on 47th street and “decided to just take a chance.” For men on Chicago’s South side, it’s a good thing that he did.

Legacy Men’s Boutique is not your average thrift store. This well furnished resale shop carries an impressive assortment of gently used and new clothing and accessories. Shoppers will find everything from suits and shirts to shoes and cufflinks. Suit pricing begins at $25, and there’s even a “boutique rack” for clients seeking higher-end items. Legacy also carries a wide range of sizes from small to big and tall.   To its credit, Legacy boasts nearly as many women as men as customers.

It helps that Muhammad has always liked to dress. The former self-professed “poor shopaholic” is careful to review all items for quality. “I sift through what I get. I make sure the clothes are great quality and look good. And it’s what I would wear…I just want to make sure I have a variety of styles and sizes for whoever may come in,” Muhammad shared.

Muhammad’s attention to detail is also evident in the store’s visual merchandising. Items are neatly and creatively displayed. Along with store manager Traccee Black, Muhammad creates a store environment that is comfortable and appealing for shoppers.   The team also happily assists patrons with styling.

For Muhammad, providing affordable clothing options for men in his community is not just a business model, but part of his legacy. “ What have I done while I was here? I want to be able to leave a legacy behind. And those young men, I want to be able to help them when they come in, as far as beginning their legacy. And the first part of it is their appearance.   Because that’s the first thing people see,” Muhammad said.
