Can you believe it’s August already? Yikes! The end of Summertime Chi is drawing near. Fortunately, there are tons of great activities to enjoy and end the summer with a bang. Check out 11 Events You Should Look for this month:
Summer House Music Series @Pier 31- Thursdays – 3101 S. Lake Shore Dr.
Summertime Chi wouldn’t be complete without house music at the beach. Kick it with with good music, food and drink specials and good people. Every Thursday at Pier 31.
Black Harvest Film Festival – August 4-30- Gene Siskel Film Center
The Black Harvest Film Festival is a month-long “celebration of the stories, dreams, history, and legacy of African Americans and the African diaspora, as interpreted by independent filmmakers from around the U.S. and abroad.” Black Harvest will feature films covering the gamut of the Black life including Social Activism and community issues, Black love and relationships, artist biographies, Chicago-centric films, as well as comedies, dramas and sci-fi.
Sunday Soul hosted by Black Bourbon Society- Persona Lounge- August 5
On August 5, the Black Bourbon Society will host its first event in Chicago. Guests will be treated to small bites, sounds by DJ J Grilla, and specialty cocktails featuring Makers Mark.
Amanda Seales Presents: Smart, Funny, & Black- Thalia Hall- August 7- Late Show – 10pm
If you follow Amanda Seales, you know you simply can’t put her in a box. The actress/comedian/writer/podcast host is constantly expanding her footprint on the entertainment landscape- all while proudly representing the culture. So, it comes as no surprise that her latest endeavor is as multifaceted as she is.
Seales presents (and hosts) Smart, Funny & Black (SFB) – Lituation 101 Tour. SFB is a competition where contestants test their knowledge of black history, black culture and the black experience. The winner will be crowned the as the “Master Blackspert.” And of course, there is a live band. Expect shenanigans.

Chicago Westside Music Festival- August 18
90’s R&B is back and in full effect at this year’s Chicago Westside Music Festival. Artists 702, Silk and Angie Stone will rock the stage at this annual free event. Food vendors will be available. Taste of Black Chicago- August 18- 7351 S. Stony Island
Presented by Black Chicago Eats, Taste of Black Chicago is a food festival created to showcase the best in Chicago’s Black owned restaurants, caterers and chefs. Celebrating Chicago’s Black food scene is the mission. In addition to food vendors, the event will feature DJ, live performances, food demos and kids’ activities. The event is free, however, a $5 donation is suggested.
3 Yards Bangin Housefest – 8600 S. Anthony- August 18 (1-11 pm)
The house music summer takeover continues. Get your party on to 10 hours on non-stop House music. Veteran DJs Mike Dunn and Andre Hatchett are on the roster. Food vendors and an expanded bar area are available. Proceeds benefit the Hip Hop Detoxx youth outreach foundation.
Bow Ties and Sundresses- A Cocktail Party and Silent Auction- August 19- Mars Art Gallery
Bow Ties and Sundresses is the first annual fundraising event presented by Project Higher Ed and Love Cork Screw. Project Higher Ed is an official nonprofit organization that offers college prep services to minority, underrepresented Chicago Public High School students.
The event will celebrate the completion of Project Higher Ed’s Inaugural Pilot Program and feature music, dancing, food, cocktails, networking opportunities and a silent auction.

South Shore Summer Fest- Featuring Jeffrey Osborne- August 19- South Shore Cultural Center- 3 pm- 8pm
The South Shore Cultural Center will host its 8th annual Summer fest. Features food and music/entertainment including a headline performance by R&B legend Jeffrey Osborne.

Ziggy Marley Rebellion Rises 2018 Tour @ Thalia Hall- August 28
Thalia Hall is popping this month- first with Amanda Seales: Smart, Funny and Black; and now with veteran reggae performer Ziggy Marley touring for his latest album release, Rebellion Rises. Tickets are available at Eventbrite.
