Films on The Lake/Movies At the Park- Film Screening- I Am Not Your Negro– DuSable Museum- August 10 at 8:15 pm
This Raoul Peck-directed documentary on the writings of influential author James Baldwin created quite the splash with its release this past February. I Am Not Your Negro explores Baldwin’s thoughts on race in America- in Baldwin’s own words. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.
WONDER-full: Tribute to the Wonder of Stevie- featuring DJ Spinna with Sets by Duane Powell and Kwest_On – August 5- The Promontory
In what’s become an annual event, WONDER-Full Tribute to the Wonder of Stevie is back. Everyone knows Stevie’s catalogue is DEEP. So prepare to dance all night long with DJ Spinna, Duane Powell and Kwest_On.
Black Harvest Film Festival- August 5- 31- The Gene Siskel Film Center will present the 23rd Annual Black Harvest Film Festival- a celebration of independent films “that tell the stories and explore the images, heritage, and history of the worldwide black experience.” Find out more in our feature piece here.
Taste of Black Chicago– August 19 -2pm- 8pm- 7351 S. Stony Island
Presented by Black Chicago Eats, Taste of Black Chicago is a newly created event to showcase the best in Chicago’s Black owned restaurants, caterers and chefs. Celebrating Chicago’s Black food scene is the mission. In addition to food vendors, the event will feature performances, food demos and kids’ activities.
The Chicago Westside Music Festival (“WSMF”) – August 19 -Douglas Park
This annual music festival is FREE to the community. WSMF was created to “fill the void of cultural programming and outlets available to residents on the West Side of Chicago.” This year’s live acts: Lil’ Mo, Vivian Green, and Dru Hill. And again, did we mention FREE. Nice.
South Shore Summer Fest- August 20- South Shore Cultural Center
Summer fest featuring food, local merchants and live entertainment. Scheduled to performed are the South Shore Drill team, LeVert and Cameo.
Summer Music Series with Dee Alexander & Jackie Powell- August 30- 6 – 9pm Harper Court The Harper Court Summer Music Series ends with a bang – with Chicago jazz favorite Dee Alexander, and beloved DJ Duane Powell. The Dee Alexander Quartet has had a busy summer playing venues from the DuSable Summer Jazz series to Tuesdays on the Terrace at the MCA. No doubt Alexander will bring the funk, or shall we say the jazz, to the streets of Hyde Park.
