Can you believe it’s December?  Where.Did.This.Year.Go? Despite the cold temps, and the snow, the party never fully stops in Chicago. You can end this year on a cultural high note, and take advantage of the last events of 2016. Here are a few noteworthy Chicago events you should look for in December:

Opened December 4- The Other Cinderella- Black Ensemble Theatre
In celebration of its 40th Anniversary, the Black Ensemble Theatre has dedicated 2016 to bringing back its biggest hits- and no Black Ensemble production has been more popular than The Other Cinderella. Since its debut in 1976, The Other Cinderella has dazzled audiences with its original musical numbers and Afrocentric take on the fairy tale classic. The critically acclaimed production opened on December 4 and runs through January 8. Visit www.blackensembletheatre.org for tickets.

December 9-11- Harlem Fine Arts Show- Life Creative
The largest traveling African Diasporic art show in the United States is coming to Chicago. The Harlem Fine Arts Show runs throughout the weekend, and will feature an opening night reception (Dec 9), and exhibition and sale, and Gospel Brunch. This is a unique opportunity for both fledging art investors and serious art aficionados to explore art from throughout the African Disaspora and as well as American visual artists.

December 10-11- Voices Heard- Expressions of Visionary Black WomenThe Promontory- Hyde Park
It’s not everyday that you come across an all-woman jazz showcase. But alas, this rare treat is coming to Chicago’s South side this month. This two-day festival, curated by jazz flautist and Chicago native Nicolle Mitchell, features the sounds of gifted Black female jazz musicians from across the country. Chicago cellist Tomeka Reid is amongst the talented lineup. For more information and tickets for Voices Heard, visit the Promontory website.

December 10- 11- Vends and Vibes- 305 E. Garfield Blvd.
Vends + Vibes: An Arts Marketplace is a FREE two-day, one-block-long boutique winter marketplace of handmade crafts and unique productions by primarily South Side artists and creative entrepreneurs, soundtracked by local DJs and featuring creative activities for children and adults.
The 2016 Vends + Vibes will be held Saturday and Sunday, December 10–11 from 1–5pm on the UChicago Arts Block. This is truly an event for all ages.
Among the features:

  • A Kids Korner makerspace in the Holiday Woodshop on Sunday from 1-4pm
  • Artist-led activities for kids, families, and the young at heart
  • Winter-friendly drink and menu specials at the Currency Exchange Café and BING

December 16- Red Clay Dance Holiday Party and Youth Sharecase- Fuller Park Auditorium      331 W. 45th St
The Red Clay Dance Academy, Youth Ensemble and the Two Planks Theatre Ensemble are celebrating the holidays with the Red Clay Dance Holiday Party and Youth Sharecase. Check out what Red Clay Dance has been up to. Proceeds from this event go towards supporting the Red Clay Dance Youth Ensemble in traveling to Dallas, TX to participate in the International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference in 2017.  You can support this endeavor by visiting http://www.redclaydance.com.
